Pineapple

You could say that I've been a little obsessed with fruit lately. It's been the subject of many of my photos, and I can't seem to eat enough of it. Especially oranges and pineapple. Mmmm pineapple. But there is another reason for all of these photos of fruit...

I'm pregnant! And these little snapshots of kumquats and limes represent the baby that is growing in my belly. At 10 weeks, the baby was the size of a kumquat. 11 weeks was a fig (I never found one at any of the local stores). At 12, he or she was as big as a lime. And now, as I begin my 13th week, one site says it's the size of a medium shrimp. I'm going to skip this week's picture. Couldn't it have been something like a small peach instead? :)

Steve and I feel so incredibly blessed, the love from our families has been amazing, and we're already so excited for this next chapter in our lives. Most days, I still can't believe it (am I really going to be a mom??), but I know that God has a plan. I pray for his guidance and courage through it all.

And guess what? By week 33, the baby will weigh about as much as a pineapple. A pineapple! I can't wait.

Snow Days

Here we are on day 3 of our Seattle version of a winter storm. It's been quite the mix of anticipation, excitement, relaxation, and boredom. While it's been nice to sleep and sit around the house, I know Steve is itching to get into work, and in the back of my mind, a voice keeps telling me I should be more productive. Oh well. It will be over soon enough. Yesterday was a great day though, and very much what snow days are all about.

While Steve set up his work-from-home station, I enjoyed some tea, a blueberry muffin (I made this batch the night before), and the view out our window.

Around mid-morning, Patrick and Paige came over to our place, and we got ready to walk up to the top of Phinney Ridge.

Along the way there were plenty of photo ops--especially this one of Batman with a unicorn.

We walked over to Cafe Vita to enjoy some hot chocolate and treats, in honor of Patrick. It was his birthday! Greenwood Ave was pretty busy, but mostly filled with walkers, sledders, and some skiers. We hung out there for awhile, talking and people watching.

Afterwards we headed to the store, bought some lunch ingredients and came back home for some food, mindless tv and naps. Thanks for the snow day, Seattle. Feel free to come back again, but only once a year.

Twenty Photos from Twenty-Eleven

I can't believe it's already 2012. 2011 was a strange year--tough in some ways, but very happy in many others. One thing is for sure, I took a lot of photos in 2011. I tried to narrow them down to 20 shots that, to me, capture 2011.

1. In my fifth year as a teacher, I was finally able to say I kind of knew what I was doing. I also realized that I'm getting old, had my eyes checked, and had to buy glasses for the first time.

2. I participated in The Beauty Collective and shot a photo a day with another blogger. This one I secretly titled: "Home is where the heart is." I loved living in our home this year.

3. In February, Steve and I took a trip to Arizona. We visited my grandparents, went to a spring training game, but unfortunately missed most of the sun.

4. My second Glee flash mob was a lot of fun, especially with a friend or two to dance with.

5. In April we headed to Mexico for some much needed sunshine.

6 and 7. May was California month and such a busy time overall (May is always the busiest month of the year--I'm going to make a mental note of this for 2012). But there were so many wonderful moments: Trudelle family time, a graduation, and a beautiful wedding.

8. A trip to the Hood Canal for Memorial Day, and one of my favorite weekends of the year. The couples in our small group really made an impact on my life in 2011.

9. There was a lot of planning for babies in 2011. My friend Ginger's shower was in June. She later welcomed baby Julianne in August.

10. For the 4th of July I visited my good friend, Jess, in her beloved city, Denver. This dessert was part of what may have been my favorite meal of 2o11.

11. We celebrated our first anniversary on July 10th.

12. Steve turned 30 in 2011 so we partied, nerdy-30 style.

13 and 14. This summer brought a series of difficult times for my family and friends. I hope to reflect more on the lessons that I believe God was teaching me this summer. Among them-- dependency on him, and the power of prayer.

15. I feel like an honorary aunt to little Greta, who turned 1 year old in September.

16. Throughout 2011 I had the honor of helping my sister plan her wedding. On a beautiful sunny day in September she married Josh in Seattle. It was a perfect day.

17. In October we spent a weekend at the Alderbrook Resort. One of the things I look forward to the most is spending time like this with my husband. He's the best.

18. Steve is all about the 3 F's of Fall: food, football, and foliage. I already miss the bright leaves on the tree outside our house.

19. One of the highlights of my short career has been the Roots of Empathy program, which I lead at my school (with the help of some great babies and parents).

20. There was so much to be thankful for during the holidays this year. Robin and Josh flew in from New York, my Grandpa Jack was able to join us for Christmas Eve and Christmas, and we enjoyed many meals together, reminiscing on past holidays and looking forward to the upcoming year.

In 2012, I'm inspired to live with intentionality. I hope to build in more time to get to know God, listen for direction, and follow through with goals. When I think of the year ahead, I'm intimidated (what if I do a poor job with all of these resolutions?), but also hopeful. As the months pass, I'll remember that I'm not alone--God is there too--and I've been blessed with amazing friends and a loving family.

I saw this quote on a Facebook status over New Years and think it's a simple, but perfect message for heading into 2012:

A few weeks ago, my dear friend Katie asked if I would take some photos for her family. I was pretty honored to spend the morning with such warm, friendly people (including some really cute kids).

We headed out to SPU where Katie's father-in-law has worked for many years. The campus there is small, but beautiful. I think it's a place I would have enjoyed attending for college.

After our little session at SPU, we headed back to the house. Isaiah had a snack, played with some cars (his reward for taking pictures), and I enjoyed the lunch that was graciously offered.

P Squared, Patrick LaPaige--call them whatever you like, but just know that once you've met the Colgans, you've met some friends for life. Last weekend I took some photos of these two while we walked around Greenlake, strolled through their neighborhood and hung out on the library steps. I'm surprised that we didn't run into anyone they knew (once he meets you, Patrick will remember your name forever). But the weather was perfect, and I had a blast capturing these two beautiful people.

Flash is pretty fast. But so are kangaroos.

My other friend Jenny gave me this beautiful thrifted afghan for my birthday. I'm loving the mix of colors.

Weekend in Cle Elum

My mom and dad had a core group of friends in high school, and somehow, the group has managed to remain close over the years. We call them the "dinner group," and they've been through a lot together. Now, the kids have kids and it's a pretty big group when you get everyone together. About a week ago, we spent a weekend together in Cle Elum at the Huntley Lodge--an amazing place with a central lodge and clusters of cabins. We had the place to ourselves so we explored the grounds, lounged around the outdoor kitchen, ate lots of food and played golf (or for the non-golfers, went into town). For a large group (and a few dogs), it was the perfect place.

I was in charge of setting up the timer on the camera so we could all get in for a group shot. It took awhile (and lots of running back and forth), but we finally got it.

Saturday

I can never get anything done on Saturdays. The extent of my productivity has been one hour of pilates, and signing up for a photography class by a photographer I met the other night at an event. I've spent today in my sweats, one minute starting to clean the house, and the next getting distracted by the internet, the bursts of sunshine outside, and the bright red tree that I see out of our corner window.

I've been trying so hard to capture the tree's colors on my camera. Every time the sun peeks out I hop in my boots and rush outside to get a shot in the right light. I researched a bit on aperture and shutter speed because I read somewhere that knowing these things could help (maybe I'll actually learn at my class).

I remembered this project and decided to take some of the tree inside with me to make a leaf garland. I went on a walk around the neighborhood, picked out some of my favorite leaves and strung them up with a needle and thread. The Pacific Northwest calendar is from Mossiere.

Then I placed a few little pine cones next to the succulent on our kitchen table.

There. We're decorated for fall. Was it productive? I'm not sure, but I'm not going to worry about it. This is what Saturdays are for.

Autumn Colors Week

It's autumn colors week at Poppytalk so I thought I'd take the opportunity to scan my photo collection for tomorrow's color: orange. When I think of orange, I think of my friend Aubree. In high school she collected everything orange: orange socks, orange shoes, orange Old Navy performance fleece vests (who didn't have a few of those?).

Yesterday, it was yellow, so I added a few yellow photos the growing Flickr pool. Yellow reminds me of my friend Mckenzie. I think it's her favorite color, but it's also the color she would be if she were a color. Bright, happy and fun. :)

My friend Tina sent me a text the other day that said "would you be willing to take some photos of the 3 of us?" I wrote back: "you, me, Greta--sounds good!" It's my joke that Tina's daughter, Greta, is my best friend (she's 1 year old), and I have an ongoing competition with my friend Paige about who Greta likes more. But really, her parents win. Together they make a pretty cute family.

Weekend at Alderbrook

A few weeks ago, Steve and I finally redeemed our Groupon vouchers for a weekend at Alderbrook Resort in Hood Canal. One week after my sister's wedding, it was the perfect time to get away for a few days. We decided to take the ferry route from West Seattle to Southworth, which may have taken longer than driving the whole way, but it made for a fun part of the trip.

Steve was pretty hungry so he bought a pretzel on the ferry. I wouldn't say pretzels are their specialty.

These photos make the weather seem cold, but surprisingly the air was only a bit chilly. I love ferry rides in Washington.

When we checked in, two bottles of wine were waiting for us in our room (they came with the package). I had heard about the rooms at the resort, and they really were as nice as I'd expected. High ceilings, large bathroom and a big comfy bed.

The next morning we had breakfast at the restaurant. Since breakfast is my favorite meal, and I can never decide if I want sweet or savory, I convinced Steve to let me get both. I didn't regret it.

Although we were only there for two nights, it was funny how we fell into a little routine. Sleep in, eat breakfast, take a long walk down the dock, and then find a place to explore before coming back to eat some more. I wish every day could be like that. I also wished I could pass for an "unattended kid" and receive the following consequence.

With the weather cool, but not cold, our walks down the dock were so pleasant. There was a great view of the Olympic mountains and I'm pretty sure we spotted a seal (although I was never fast enough to catch a photo of it).

On Saturday, we drove out to a lake where Steve's family had come for vacation, a few years ago. It was so much lower than we remembered! In fact, Steve's brothers and sisters had jumped off the giant rock many times, and it's a little scary to think that these rocks and trees had been hiding beneath the surface.

Later that evening we filled our wine glasses and sat out on the back patio of the resort. Although the resort may have been full, it was so peaceful and quiet. We felt more like we were staying at a family cabin, than at a hotel.

On our last morning we explored the dock one more time before heading out to the resort's "View Point Loop." We kind of laughed when we saw a map of the "trail," which couldn't have been more than a half a mile, but it turned out to be pretty nice, with many plants and trees to photograph.

Steve posed for some "senior pics." We're going to make one of these an 8x10. Which one is your favorite? ;)

Not until it was time to go home did I see this little guy, walking around the lobby of the resort. I know some people don't like cats (and I probably would get sick of taking care of one) but I wanted to take him home.

Staying at Alderbrook was certainly a treat. I don't know if we'll be back for awhile (it's not the cheapest get away), but we definitely came back home relaxed and ready for another week.

Almost Ready

Tomorrow my little sister is getting married! It's been a busy week, and like all wedding weeks, today has been even busier. Among the tasks on my to-do list today was snipping rosemary sprigs from a giant bush in front of my house (which I didn't know was rosemary until last Monday--thanks Paige!). Tomorrow we're going to tuck the herbs in the napkins at each place setting, and it felt so great to not have to pay for this one piece of decoration.

Rosemary is the herb of remembrance, fidelity, and love. Perfect for a wedding.

I also finished up these bride and groom cake toppers and sent them off with the wedding planner. The number of do-it-yourself projects for this wedding sort of got out of hand, but I think we're finally almost ready.

More than anything, I'm looking forward to watching my sister's face as she looks around at all of their guests, soaks in the events, and experiences the joy of vowing to love Josh forever. I'm going to try not to become the second photographer tomorrow, because I too, just want to soak it all in.

Summer Flashback: Steve's 30th

Stephen J. Trudelle turned 30 this past August. I had been giving him a hard time about it (ever since he turned 29) but little did he know that a surprise "Nerdy 30" was in the works. I was nervous that he would find out, and had a difficult time getting him to commit to plans that Friday night. We ended up walking to the Phinney Farmer's Market while some friends and family showed up in their best nerd attire and set up decorations. We returned from the market, opened the gate, and were blown away by noisemakers, poppers and our friends, dressed in some pretty great outfits. Steve was completely surprised.

Before the party, I bought some nerdy retro glasses at a costume shop as well as name tags and party hats. I also printed off a bunch of photos of Steve from over the years, all with a general theme of weirdness or nerdiness. I was amazed at how many of these shots I have! ;) The pictures were taped to a chalkboard and hung up on tree branches, all over the yard.

Steve really likes candy, although he claims he will give it up, sometime during his 30th year. I don't believe him. That's why a candy bar was also present, complete with his favorites: Sour Patch Kids and Red Vines (ok, fine, maybe Red Vines are my favorite).

I wasn't sure what to get Steve for his big 30th b-day, but luckily he made it easy. A few months ago, Steve and I decided to cook our first steak of the season on our BBQ. We were enjoying our meal when we noticed smoke coming out of the grill. When Steve went to investigate, flames were shooting up from the inside. After using up our fire extinguisher, we finally called 911. Luckily we put it out before the firemen got there...but the BBQ was toast.

When I imagined having the party at our house, I knew it needed to involve charred burgers and dogs. So I picked out a nice new grill, and with some help (thanks Robin and Josh!) had it waiting (and hiding under a cover) for the party. After Steve got over his shock and changed into some mismatched nerd gear, I announced that it was time to fire up the BBQ. He started to protest, but then understood, took off the BBQ cover and admired his new grill.

Captain Ron was in charge of hamburgers and spicy hotdogs. He also wore a pretty sweet fish tie.

And what party would be complete without a photo booth? I really don't know if I will ever get sick of seeing the crazy photos that come out of these things. Pretty funny.

As you can see, the word "nerd" was interpreted differently by everyone.

I do think that Josh, my sister's fiance, had the best costume though. He looked like he came straight out of Where's Waldo.

After eating we played one of Steve's favorite games, Telephone Pictionary.

Finally, we finished off the night with root beer floats. I'm not sure why, but root beer floats had just seemed like a nerdy dessert choice to me.

After the party was over, I remember feeling a huge sense of relief. It's stressful planning a surprise party! But 30 is one of those birthdays that you've just gotta celebrate with lots of style. Or, if you're nerds like us, no style at all.

Summer Flashback: Susan's Shower and a Miracle

Last July we celebrated our friend, Susan, and her future baby girl, by throwing her a "French Picnic" themed shower. Once again, the shower was a team effort, and it was so much fun to decorate my house and fill it with delicious breakfast treats.

We sipped mimosas and sparkling water in mason jars, which had been filled with all of the utensils needed for a picnic on my living room floor. The menu also included French pastries, baguettes, butter, and cheese, cupcakes, berries and quiche.

I made some fabric streamers and Paige contributed her doily bunting. We relied on Tessa's knowledge of French to label the food and fill the chalkboard with family words.

We also added to her baby's wardrobe, and decorated another round of little onesies. I wish I had taken more pictures of them--they were so cute! The outfit pictured above ended up being the clothes that Susan's daughter wore when she came home from the hospital.

While Susan opened gifts we played baby shower bingo, I mean, BINGO Le Bebe.

We asked guests to write a short message for Susan and Stephen, and they received some very sweet notes. We also showed off Susan's beauty by hanging photos of her on the clothesline.

Everybody took home small bags filled with French macarons. I picked these little guys up at my favorite coffee shop and put them in bags, stamped with a "merci."

It was our pleasure to honor Susan on that day. Less than two weeks later, her baby girl, Abigail, was born. This little family has gone through so much since that day. Abigail became sick when she was only a few days old, and has been in the hospital for weeks. When I wrote to ask for prayers, we all knew that Abigail needed a miracle. I'm not sure exactly when or how, but God gave this family a miracle. Abigail has recently "graduated" to the regular hospital floor (out of the NICU) and her body is working its way back to health. It is amazing to see this little girl and know that she will grow up and be such an inspiration to her friends and family.

When we talk about Abigail now, we also talk about the incredible power of prayer. Today, while discussing this with my friend Ginger (a new mother herself), I couldn't help marveling at the progress Abigail has made. "I just don't know how she could overcome all of that," I said. Ginger's response was so true--something I already knew, and have always known, deep in my heart. "With God. That's how."

Summer Flashback: Anniversary

I spotted this tree house online, while searching for a place to stay for our trip out to Coeur d'Alene in July. When I showed Steve the photos he said, "We are doing that!" But at first, I wasn't so sure. I had imagined that we'd spend our first anniversary in a hotel or spa--you know, someplace with room service and a view of the lake. This tree house didn't even have running water! But luckily Steve convinced me to book it (spas are boring anyway), and we had an amazingly relaxing weekend up in the trees.

The treehouse is one of the "rooms" offered at American Country Bed and Breakfast, which is located just outside of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I was most impressed with the cleanliness, charm, and hospitality of the hosts, Brian and Shar. And boy, do those two love their antiques and themes! Our treehouse was filled with details that reminded me of a small Montana cabin out in the woods. But the best part was the large deck, attached to the front of the tree house. Steve practiced music while I read The Colors of Hope. It was completely quiet out there, and the view of the tree-lined horizon was even better than a lake. :)

In the morning we walked down a path to the main house where a breakfast tray with fresh coffee and homemade bread waited for us. We sat in the sun for a bit, and then took our half-empty coffee cups back up to the tree house deck, while our hosts continued to prepare our delicious breakfast.

After breakfast we went for a leisurely hike around Mineral Springs and then came back for more relaxing, and later, a delicious dinner at a floating restaurant.

After dinner we checked facebook and noticed a status update by our friend, Greg Ehrlich. He was touring with the band, Allen Stone, and they were playing that night...in Coeur d'Alene! We had to go.

The next morning, July 10th, we enjoyed another yummy breakfast, filled out the guest journal, and said goodbye to this happy place.

We spent a few hours in downtown Coeur d'Alene and got a kick out of the receipt we received after parking in one of the lots.

Another reason for our trip across the mountains was to attend a funeral service in Spokane for my great aunt and uncle (my grandpa's brother). We went to celebrate their lives (both had passed away within the year), their marriage, and the many ways in which they impacted the lives of others.

My great uncle Evan was my grandpa's only brother and they were very close (they are the men pictured above, in my blog header photo). When the boys were young (about 3 and 4), they had their own radio show, and sang on the Vaudeville circuit in Spokane. Their mother would dress them up in costume, mini tuxedos, and top hats, and they would sing and dance while she played the piano. Of course, these were the kinds of memories that came up over and over again at the service, in addition to touching stories about ways that Evan and Betty had selflessly sacrificed money and time to help others.

After the service, we headed to a park for a BBQ. I loved watching my grandpa catch up with his old friends. It's hard to believe that just a week later his heart would stop, and he would be in the hospital himself. It's been a long road since then, but my grandpa is much stronger, and still improving every day. I am sure his brother is very proud.

Throughout the day I found myself amazed by the beauty of friendship and family. Although there was certainly sadness that we could no longer enjoy the company of two beautiful people, there was also a sense of peace, and an understanding that family is not just for here, but forever.

I also couldn't help thinking back to the previous July 10th, our wedding day. It has only been a year, but we've already grown a lot I think--we're a team, and I feel so lucky to have this guy right by my side.

We drove home that same day, feeling pretty tired, but well rested at the same time. The sun was setting along the Columbia River, so we took some photos along the edge. I just love this picture for many reasons. The view is nice of course, but this is just so Steve. Cargo shorts, flip flops, posing reluctantly for another photo by his snap-happy wife.

This next one is pretty standard too. Pensive, eating a bag of tortilla chips plain. If I hadn't eventually taken those away from him, he would have eaten the whole bag.

I know it's cheesy to say, but the best part about this trip was simply spending time with this guy that I love so dearly. He's funny and kind, and even though he couldn't even set down the bag of chips for the few seconds that it took to take this next picture, I love him. Very very much.

Summer Flashback: Ginger's Shower

Summer is almost over, and although I'm not incredibly excited about it, it's time to get ready for fall. This summer has been full--fuller than I would have ever expected--of highs and lows, some sadness as well as great great joy. I'm hoping to spend these last few days of vacation reflecting on the events of this summer, and the many ways in which my life has been blessed in such a short period of time.

First up is this sweet couple. Josh and Ginger's lives changed this summer when baby Julianne entered the world. These two are in our small group from church, and the ladies in the group could hardly wait to throw Ginger a shower.

My friend Tina hosted the shower at her house, and we all pitched in to provide the menu and decorations. Of course my favorite chalkboard made an appearance.

We chose aqua, gray, orange and coral for the color scheme. We used vintage sheets for the table cloth and bunting, tissue paper poms, and paint chips (as well as some fun glitter paper) for a mini bunting banner, inspired by this one.

The menu included fresh fruit, Trophy cupcakes, quiche, bread and butter.

The butter was no ordinary butter, though. Tessa made her special strawberry and sun-dried tomato butters. They were a hit.

We also put up photos of Ginger around the house, and sipped on San Pellegrino, Ginger's favorite fizzy drink.

Ginger has a lot of friends, and a few with little ones of their own, or on the way.

We couldn't get enough of these matching baby bumps. So, we made them take a ton of pictures together in our photo booth, that was set up in the corner.

These are only a few of the photos that were taken in the booth. :) The black frame is from Ikea, and the rest of the props were gathered from our houses (or made by Paige).

I had taken a bunch of pictures of Ginger and Josh one night at a BBQ, and we compiled them into a book for the guests to sign. We didn't play any games, but had each guest write their address on a thank you note envelope, which would be ready for Ginger to send out after writing thank you's (I got this idea from Katie and Jenny and use it at every shower now!) Ginger drew two envelopes from the stack and each winner got to pick out a nail polish (I don't have photos of them here but the color names were sugar daddy and bahama mama. Get it?) :)

We also decorated onesies, and I think they turned out pretty cute.

For favors, guests took home ginger flavored treats--ginger honey, made by Tessa, and ginger snaps. Paige spray painted the lids of the jars with chalkboard paint so they can be used again!

It's been over two months since this shower, and the best part is that little Julianne Noelle is here, sweet, petite, and cute as a button.

Miracles

On July 16th a few good friends and I hosted a baby shower for our dear friend, Susan. My house was so full of people that I had to use the theme (a French picnic) as an excuse for why many guests had to sit on the floor. It was so apparent that day that Susan is so loved. I had bought this print for Susan, not just to show her how much we love her, but also because it seemed like the perfect message to send to her future child. Susan and her husband, Stephen, had been waiting for months to adopt a baby girl, and she was due to be born any day. That little baby was bound to be so very loved.

Stephen and Susan had gone through a lot in the adoption process--ups and downs, worry, excitement, fear, and finally relief. When Abigail came, we passed her around, cuddled her, and marveled at her pretty black hair. Abigail means "father's joy" but the smiles on both of her parents faces were so big--it was one of those moments you want to pause forever.

Then, just a few days later, Abigail was admitted to Children's Hospital with a virus that threatened to complicate multiple functions and organs, including her lungs, heart, and kidneys. It's been over 10 days, and while Abigail's body has been fighting, she continues to need critical life-saving care...and lots of prayer.

In fact, Abigail needs a miracle. Please pray for her, and her family today.

I've been learning how hard it can be to pray for miracles. It's hard because doubt, fear, and frustration creep in so easily, and their noise distracts us from our conversation with God. But at the same time, I really think that all God wants from us is our trust when we pray. He can and does perform miracles. So today I'm going to fill my prayers for this family with hope and faith, knowing that even when some things seem impossible, God says that with him, all things are possible.

A Morning Picnic

Its been about two weeks since I've spent some quality time with Steve. He's been on the east coast for his family's vacation while I've been here, spending time with my grandpa (he is making a slow recovery, but we are thankful, and especially thankful for your prayers!).

The last time that Steve and I shared a meal at home was this breakfast picnic. I was inspired by Rebekah's monthly project, Dinner at Eight, and thought I'd try a breakfast date (my favorite meal). The menu was very simple: whole wheat pancakes with strawberries and honey, grapes, and some good coffee. These pancakes are pretty plain, but with strawberries and honey (I also added some vanilla to the mix) they are just sweet enough. I don't know why, but they also taste better when they are mini pancakes, made in a silver dollar pancake pan. ;)

While Steve was on a run, I set up a little picnic on our living room floor. I spread out our wedding quilt, (beautifully made by Katie and Jenny), a few pillows and a picnic basket and crate for tables.

I had been looking forward to using my chalkboard coasters for a long time--I'm on a real chalkboard kick these days. Also on the breakfast tray were a few mason jars with napkins and wooden silverware as well as some flowers (leftover from a baby shower).

When Steve returned from his run, he was pretty shocked to see everything set up on the living room floor. And to be honest, I was pretty shocked that he cared so much! I think he could sense that I had taken the time to make this a special morning. So, we sat down together on the blanket and enjoyed our breakfast before Steve had to get ready for work. It felt like such a treat to make time together before starting the day.

Although we don't have kids yet, we definitely find ourselves immersed in our computers way too often. On this morning we made sure to put those babies away.

I can't wait until our next date night, or morning, or maybe a lunch. This project is full of my favorite things: creativity, food, and some quality time with the guy I love.

There are times when God seems to shake you awake out of your daily life and say, "Stop what you're doing! It's time to pay attention to what is important!" My grandpa is still fighting to regain consciousness after his heart suffered cardiac arrest, last Tuesday. I've been feeling God reminding me to slow down, pay attention, and depend on Him through this hard time of waiting.

When I received the phone call last Tuesday, I was in a dressing room, hoping to find a dress to wear to a close friend's wedding. "Don't you already have some dresses you could wear?" Steve had asked that day. But I didn't want to wear an old dress. I wanted a new one. I tried to convince him that paying some crazy amount at Anthropologie wasn't a big deal, and in the back of my mind, secretly wondered if I would have time to find a new pair of shoes too. But when I got the phone call about my grandpa, it was as if God took me by the shoulders and gave me a firm shake. For a split second I glanced at the dresses on the hangers. You need to go! Now! I piled them quickly into a heap over my arm, dropped them on the counter, and ran out of the store.

Over these past few days, I've spent most hours of the day at the hospital with my grandpa. I watched in hope as he started to open his eyes and seemed to recognize us, and then felt my heart drop when he had to be placed on a strong sedative again. I've been struck by how closely I'm paying attention to everything, and how quickly the moments of joy, fear, and disappointment come and go. I've tried to depend on the one thing that I know is constant--the encouragement and hope of turning to God, reading scripture, and lifting up my fears and doubts in prayer.

Since Tuesday, so much has changed. Last night, my sister, Robin came back to the states for good, and will be staying with us until she gets married. We've already started working on some last-few-months-before-the-wedding tasks. I can't believe her wedding day is exactly 2 months from today.

On Wednesday, Steve left for Rhode Island to watch his best friend, Chris, marry the love of his life, Hope. I've gotten glimpses of their wedding day (today) via text messages and photos, and just heard that Steve "nailed" his groomsman speech.

And a just few hours ago, our good friends Susan and Stephen announced the birth of their daughter (born today), Abigail Olivia-Jeanne. Reunions, marriages, birth--these are life's greatest moments. It's amazing how, during a slow difficult time, God inserts moments that you wish would never end.

Today's contrasts of joy and pain remind me that in all circumstances, God is teaching me. He's teaching me to remember what is important, because inevitably there will be hard times. God sustains us in the difficult times, and the same God also gives us our happiest moments in life. I am thankful that in all of these times, God is there too.

I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. Everywhere, and in all things, I have learned to endure both fullness and hunger, both to have plenty and to be in need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Eagles

Isaiah 40: 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint

On Tuesday, my grandpa Jack collapsed while playing tennis, and suffered cardiac arrest. Witnesses say he received CPR right away and was shocked in order to get his heart beating again. When I found out, I rushed to the emergency room at Overlake Hospital, while prayer after prayer raced through my head. My grandpa is nearing 87 years old, but he is active, otherwise healthy, and he is the patriarch of the Erlandson family.

While I crossed the 520 bridge, my eye caught sight of a large bald eagle, perched on a post, watching traffic go by. I breathed deep, and prayed that this was some kind of sign. Bald eagle sightings are rare.

I arrived at the hospital to learn that my grandpa would be treated with a protocol called induced hypothermia. This treatment increases the odds that a patient will wake up after a cardiac arrest, but it also can take days to fully see changes. Often, patients just won't ever wake up.

I decided to go home that evening to rest. As I walked up the stairs to my front door, I saw something large fly across the sky. A bald eagle was soaring above, with two friends--two smaller birds--following close behind. I kind of couldn't believe it. Two bald eagles in one day? I suppose it could have been the same bird I saw earlier on the bridge, but something in my heart leaped. What are the odds?

As I got ready for bed, I was drawn to the book of Isaiah, and especially the verses at the end of chapter 40. "...Those that hope in the LORD will renew their strength" encouraged me. Right now, we need God's hope. We need His healing. I kept reading, and suddenly felt a lump in my throat: "They will soar on wings like eagles." When I opened up my Bible, I had completely forgotten about this verse, but there they were--the eagles.

I don't really know what all of this means--the tests, the medications, the ups and downs. Hospitals can be scary and confusing. But I do know that there is a God that is involved completely in my grandpa's treatment. I believe that God can heal, and that anything is possible.

One Year Ago Today...

I was riding the Ducks! Yes, it's true, I accomplished one of my goals one year ago at my bachelorette party. The weather was much nicer (hot actually!) when my mom, sister, family-to-be, and best friends showed up to celebrate one of my last days as a single lady.

We met up at a hotel in lower Queen Anne, and then walked down to the Ducks. I remember feeling a little bit like I was in a daze (although it could have been the margaritas). I couldn't believe that I was actually getting married in just two days.

Parts of the Ducks adventure were pretty darn warm, but when we hit the water, there was a nice breeze, and the ride and the view were perfect.

I remember my friend Erin insisting that I have this photo, so she bought it for me. Thanks Erin! After the ride, we headed to Via Tribunali where Robin had rented out the loft upstairs. I remember feeling like we were in a cafe in Italy. Although the night ended early (had to get beauty sleep for the rehearsal the next day), I am so thankful to have had the chance to celebrate with so many great women.

Early that day I had also gone to my third wedding hair trial. It's kind of funny to think about the stress that went in to doing my hair for my wedding (especially since my vision was something I had already done many times myself). A few weeks before I had met with my stylist to try out a do, but she never really got it right. Then, days before, I had gone in to get highlights at my salon (and try the style again), but the foils had slipped, my stylist hadn't noticed, and I ended up with bleach tiger stripes across the back of my head. She spent hours trying to fix it. I remember thinking "this is not supposed to be happening a few days before my wedding!," and came home bawling, and vowing to never see the stylist again. The problem was, she was supposed to do my hair for the wedding, and appointments had already been made for my bridesmaids at the same salon. Luckily, Robin jumped into action, booked 7 last minute appointments at Habitude in Ballard, and saved the day. My mom also called her own stylist, who fit me into a last minute appointment to fix the stripes.

This style wasn't even the look I ended up going for (I swear I'm not that picky), so my final hairstyle was determined on the morning of the big day. I ended up thinking that my hair turned out ok, but I'm mostly just glad that I won't have to worry about something like this again. It's just hair, but it sure caused a lot of stress.

I can't believe Steve and I will be celebrating our one year anniversary this weekend! I've definitely been reminiscing, and have more one-year thoughts and photos to come. :)

Summer Music Videos

After a few weeks off from work, I can say that I'm indeed rested and relaxed. Things were a bit bumpy this week after I cut myself with a sharp knife (it's already almost healed) and was the first person on the scene of a bicycle motorcycle crash (they're ok too). There's been a lot of "me time," a few projects, and a few experiments in the kitchen. I've been listening to a lot of music too, and these three songs have been on a loop on my playlist.

Brooke Fraser's "CS Lewis song" has been a part of my new morning routine, which is an effort to "have coffee with God." The lyrics are perfect for beginning a new day.

the Head and the Heart is a Seattle band that I've heard a lot of on the radio. I love this song, but the video is a bit chilly. Thank goodness it's July.

Finally, I came across Rabbit! and have been listening to their fun album Connect the Dots, all week. To me, this is a perfect summer-time tune.

California in May: part three

Part three (the final installment) of California in May represents our time in Southern California, before and after Lindsey's wedding. We spent our first night in Irvine where Steve's grandmother, Nanuka, lives. I wish I had taken more photos of our dinner with Steve's aunt and uncle, because it was delicious.

The next morning's meal was probably Steve's favorite. Nanuka prepared an egg and sausage dish, some fruit, coffee and toast...and we were stuffed. But before we could clear the table, she said, "Now wait just a minute, I have one more surprise." I watched Steve's eyes light up as she brought out the palacsinta, a traditional Hungarian dish. The closest thing I'd had to palacsinta was Swedish pancakes, but this is much better. Layers and layers of cakes with a sweet, nutty walnut spread in between each. I don't how we managed to fit it into our stomachs but we did. Of course Nanuka sent us off with leftovers.

We met up with my mom and Ron at the Orange county airport, and drove to our hotel in Santa Monica. We spent the afternoon before the wedding cruising the Santa Monica pier like true tourists.

Spending time in Southern California reminded me so much of my college days in San Diego. They feel so far away to me now, especially after living in two very different places since graduation. Beach life is so carefree, so fun--it just sucks you in. I remember walking along the boardwalk in Mission Beach (which has a similar feel to Santa Monica) with my mom after visiting USD for the first time. She took one look at my face and knew she had lost me to SoCal--at least for awhile.

The next morning we met up with Josh and Robin and did a bit more wandering. My mom suggested--subtly at first--that we ride the Ferris Wheel. Robin and I have a running joke that my mom always has to do the most touristy things on vacation. Once in New York City, she insisted that we ride a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park. We refused (I know, we're too cool). But this time, she kept bringing it up, so we agreed. Plus, it gave us a chance to capture a round of couples shots. :)

The funny thing is, after the Ferris Wheel, all of the attractions suddenly seemed like fun. We took 4 out 5 spots at the water gun race, but not one of us won. Then Robin, Josh, Steve and I stepped up to the plate and rode the roller coaster. It was pretty wimpy, but still fun.

I think from now on I'll let my mom participate in her touristy activities. Hey, maybe I'll even join her!

California in May: part two

Part two of California in May was our trip to Malibu for Lindsey and Tyler's wedding. Lindsey is Robin's best friend and college roommate. They are pretty cute together (Lindsey and Tyler and Lindsey and Robin) so we couldn't miss this event!

Lindsey and Tyler's wedding was the kind of wedding that makes you smile. Not because every single detail was planned perfectly (although it was) but because it really felt personal and sincere.

Oh yeah, and the location was amazing! The Adamson House is right on the water, and the ceremony took place under a huge beautiful tree. Lindsey walked down the aisle with stems of calla lilies that her mom and bridesmaids had each placed in a vase on their way down the aisle.

Throughout the night we danced to some cool songs (no YMCA for this couple!) and ate some amazing food and treats. I may have gone overboard with taking photos of these two, but they were just too photogenic.

Robin gave a speech. And it was funny! (she's always been the funny one, but I think I'm catching up)

I loved the lights, the mason jars, the succulents and the dark wood tables. Gah! So pretty.

Linds and Ty are a bit crazy. In a good way. I'm not sure what the story is, but I guess it's not a party unless Ty takes off his shirt? Well it happened. It was a party.

California in May: part one

We flew to California twice last May, and were lucky to attend two big events--one graduation and one wedding.

Part one of our California in May was Steve's sister's graduation from Westmont College. It just so happened that our friends, Patrick and Paige, were headed to CA on the same flight. Although it was early morning when we took off, Steve decided to show off the stack of free drink tickets he's accumulated over years of flying on Southwest. The flight attendants were impressed.

We landed in Los Angeles, took a parking shuttle to the edge of the airport, and walked across the street to Steve's grandparents' house. This was definitely the first time that I've left the airport on foot. It would have been an easy walk, except for the fact that Steve had had hernia repair surgery the week before, and wasn't able to carry anything. We were probably a funny picture--a tall, healthy guy walking like an old man, and me, rolling our suitcase with two heavy computer bags slung over my shoulder.

Steve's paternal grandparents, Kiki and Pepere, have lived in their place by the airport, ever since Steve's dad was a boy. Everywhere you look, there are family photos. I enjoyed flipping through the Trudelle family history while Steve entertained us with some piano playing.

Kiki explained that she sometimes throws this at pesky crows :)

The next morning we drove to Santa Barbara for Chrissa's graduation. Chrissa is the fourth child, a kinesiology major, and an NAIA All-American runner. She is cute, quirky, patient, and kind. And we were all there to celebrate her.

We held a little reception in the student lounge in Chrissa's dorm. We ate, took photos, and listened to Steve play a few more songs on the piano (his family was surprised to learn that he has been taking lessons since Christmas!).

After the party, we headed back to LA to watch Chrissa run the 5k at the Oxy Invitational (racing after graduation seemed crazy to me, but not to Chrissa!). It was so exciting to watch her run (I wish I had taken some photos) and reach her personal record of 17:42.56. That's 5:41 per mile people!

We drove back up to Santa Barbara to spend the night, and then back to LA to fly out the next morning. It was a packed weekend (with lots of driving), but definitely worth it. Before we left, I captured this photo of Steve with his sweet grandparents. Photos like these remind me how blessed I am to be in this Trudelle family tree. :)

Small Group Trip

I had been looking forward to this year's Memorial Day Weekend for a really long time. This was our second time to Tessa and Andrew's family home on the Hood Canal. They graciously hosted our Bethany small group for what would be a pretty perfect weekend.

After work on Friday, we packed up our slippers, sweats, food for our designated meals, and headed to the Canal. On Saturday morning we filled our coffee cups and sat in one of the best places in the house--the large sitting room with huge windows that let the light spill in.

After breakfast we headed to the beach. Josh shucked oysters and we introduced baby Greta to baby crabs.

It was so fun to have the first baby of the group on the trip with us. Greta fits right in. :)

There was also a lot of wiffleball on Saturday. I tried out Jenny and Jeff's zoom lens (thanks for letting me borrow it guys) and had a great time capturing our days in the sun.

Each couple was assigned one meal to make. We also had a guys-make-dinner-night as well as a night where the girls were in charge. This is the way to go. Each meal is so carefully prepared and is bound to feature someone's favorite recipe.

There were so many highlights, funny moments, great conversations, and lots of playing with the baby time. On our last night we built a bonfire on the beach. Thank goodness Steve brought his headlamp.

There are so many things I want to share. I want to share that we are back from an amazingly relaxing week in Mexico, but that I wore a ton of sunscreen, so it won't seem like I went at all. I want to share that it was beautiful yesterday in Seattle, and I managed to consume 3 of my favorite foods: a double shot latte, frozen yogurt (a new favorite), and pizza. I also want to share with you my deep happiness that today is Easter, and that perhaps more than ever, I am understanding the significance of this day, mostly because of what it means for my life...and for yours.

Music has transformational power. Sometimes I try to explain my faith myself, and it just doesn't come out right. But then, I hear a song and the lyrics are exactly how I am feeling, or the melody touches me and makes me feel deep happiness...or sadness.

I want to share a few of these songs with you. To me, they are what Easter is about. Faith. Love. And sharing this love with others.

Crispy Treats

When it comes to snacks, I always choose sweet over salty. Steve is the opposite. When I saw this recipe for salted brown butter crispy treats (ok fine, not a snack, but a dessert), it seemed like the best of both worlds. Pretty easy to make (although waiting for butter to brown, not burn, took some focus) and really yummy too. I chose to use a little bit less cereal so that they would be extra marshmallow-y. And since I know my husband likes salt, I sprinkled a little extra sea salt on top too.

Salted Brown Butter Crispy Treats
via Smitten Kitchen
makes 16 2 inch squares

1 stick unsalted butter, plus extra for the pan
1 10-ounce bag of marshmallows
Heaping 1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Butter (or coat with non-stick spray) an 8-inch square cake pan.

In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. It will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom as you do.

As soon as the butter takes on a nutty color, turn the heat off and stir in the marshmallows. The residual heat from the melted butter should be enough to melt them, but if it is not, turn it back on low until the marshmallows are smooth.

Remove the pot from the stove and stir in the salt and cereal together. Quickly spread into prepared pan. Let cool.

Vacation in the Desert

If you would have asked me a year ago where I would be for my February mid-winter break, I would have said "Hawaii! For my honeymoon!" When we planned our wedding last year, we decided to delay our tropical honeymoon. An escape during the cold, gray season in Seattle sounded like a better idea than leaving in July. But as winter drew closer, we realized that a trip this year was probably unlikely. I'm sure someday we'll go to Hawaii (we've both never been) but we chose Arizona instead.

Steve had been having dreams of driving through the desert, and I've always been a fan of cactus and sunshine. So that's what we did. We stayed with my grandparents in Mesa, and went to a spring training game. And even though the weather was unusually cool, it was warm enough to sit outside with t-shirts and sunglasses.

The ballpark hotdogs were especially good with jalapenos, so we each had two, and then I had a stomachache (luckily a quick nap on the lawn cured it).

The following day, we took a mini road trip to Tucson and stopped at Saguaro National Park. We picked out a hike that was described in the trail guide as "easy" (it's not like we couldn't have chosen "strenuous" but hey, we were on vacation) and I took a bunch of pictures of plants and cacti.

See? A lot of cacti.
And then I took some video. This is the first time I've used my new camera for capturing video, and it was pretty fun. I decided to edit the clips together because I realized-- these will become our family's home videos some day.
In some ways, this short trip was our delayed honeymoon. It was the first time we had traveled by plane together, just for fun, since we've been married. We ate good food, relaxed and slept, laughed at hair hats and wolf fleeces (only found in Arizona swap meets), and even wrote our initials in the sand. Overall, it was a great vacation.

Adjectives

I'm an adjectives girl. And when it comes to design (which I actually know very little about) I like to test my vocabulary and describe the "look" in 1-3 adjectives. When my sister's fiance, Josh came out for the holidays, I think he found this interest of mine a bit strange. Could it be because, as we surveyed wedding vendors, I was constantly trying to define the style I thought he and Robin wanted as "rustic modern" or "tuscan vintage chic?" Yep, I think he thought I was crazy.

But really, it's so easy to feel like a budding designer with all of the informative design blogs out there. Recently, I came across Inspired Design Daily and Linsi Brownson's online home store, Redefine Home. In particular, I find the "shop by style" category to be quite pleasing. Just look at those great adjectives: "casual coastal" "new traditional" and "steampunk lite." Here are some of my favorites (and my best attempt at adjectives) ;)

Oh, and have you come across the blog, A Creative Mint? I'm not sure what I love so much about it.

Actually I do. Leslie posts beautiful photos of projects she's working on, designs, artwork...and lots of adjectives.

There's something calming about scrolling through her pretty color palettes and found objects around her home. Talk about finding beauty in everyday things.

Finally, if I lived in New York, I would visit Moomah every day.

From what I understand, Moomah is a cafe, a playspace, a crafting center, and a third place. It was started by Tracey Stewart (wife of Jon Stewart) who writes:
Moomah was created to give parents, children and caregivers an inviting space to nurture creative stimulation, not over-stimulation. The color palette was inspired by nature and the seasons. You won’t find wacky clowns with oversized eyes and primary colors and you won’t be forced to listen to “kids music”. Moomah is a space where both parents and kids can bond over a great song, a fun project or new treat. A place where you can just be together.

I love this idea. In fact, if I were to start a business, this is what I think I would do.

Love Songs

It's been a great Valentine's Day. No big reason, except that it was just a great day. I received some cute store bought valentines, one chocolate monkey, and a card that read: To: Mrs. Turdle.

My husband made me dinner, and we drank wine while I forced him to listen to my favorite John Legend songs (inspired by the live performance I saw this weekend in DC). There are a lot of things swimming in my head these days, but I'm just thankful for a day to stop and think about all of the ways we love and are loved.

Because I'm kind of sappy, I've also been finishing my glass of wine while listening to my favorite love songs. I thought I'd share some of them with you. :)

Reminders

I spent Saturday at Olympic Sculpture Park, jogging and taking photos while Steve-o worked. It was a gorgeous day, and I remembered right away how much I love being near the ocean. I don't see it that often though, since I usually choose nearby Green Lake for my [occasional] runs. Living near Green Lake is great, but the ocean is its own majesty.

My visit also reminded me that Seattle has so many pretty places like this, and that I don't spend enough time outside in them. I think it would be a great goal to revisit one park (preferably with an ocean view) each week. For some reason, I just think it would help me keep a perspective that I need in the midst of a busy work week. This Saturday I couldn't help but think about how large the ocean is, and how small I am (my worries included) in comparison.

This weekend I also happened to read a quote by C.S. Lewis: "We need to be reminded more often than we need to be instructed." I like this. Revelation is not only about learning new concepts or gaining new perspectives. It's sometimes about simply returning to the very things that we've always believed in. God can be found in creation is one of those beliefs for me.

So, I'm hoping that I can spend more time outside, enjoy God's creation, and breathe in some healthy doses of Pacific Ocean air. :)

Steve and Tina are the leaders of our small group, so it makes sense that they'd also take the lead, and become the first parents of the group. It's hard to believe that these photos were taken last summer, and now little Greta is over 3 months old! Tina was kind enough to let me try out my new camera the other day, and take photos of her little girl.

10 for 2010 and 10 favorites

Inspired by my favorite photo project, I thought I'd reflect on 2010 by choosing 10 of my favorite photos from the year. It was harder than I thought! 2010 has really been the year of photography for me. I gained many favorite photographers through my search to find someone to shoot our wedding. We took engagement photos, wedding photos, ordered albums, and I even did my very own maternity shoot for a friend. :) I enjoyed taking 10 photos on the 10th of every month, and participated in a-photo-a-day project in November. Steve gave me this fabulous camera for Christmas, and to top it all off, I'll be submitting a photo each day in January for a special project called The Beauty Collective. Photography has become an unexpected hobby for me, and I can't wait to keep learning...

Besides photography, I've fell in love with some other things in 2010. So, without further ado, here are 10 faves for 2010:

Thankful

November has been quite a month! Since taking part in the capturing our blessings project, I've officially broken my monthly posting record. It's been challenging to remember to take a picture each day, but totally worth it. Capturing a photo a day has made me notice many things that aren't typically on my daily radar: colors, weather, lighting, angles--and in this way, I have enjoyed the creativity behind the project. At the same time, I've noticed that my eye is drawn to food, nature, facial expressions, places around my home, and the blur of movement. In this way, I have learned more about what beauty is to me.

Over the 30 days, I attached words or phrases to each photo. When I look back on these words now--each daily blessing--I can't help but feel overwhelmed. I am blessed. And for that, I'm very very thankful.

privilege

A few weekends ago, I went for a walk to get coffee on a rainy day. To be honest, my real purpose was to go for a run, but the only way I could get out the door was to promise myself a stop at the coffee shop on the way home. As I walked home, sipping my latte, I suddenly felt very lucky...lucky to be here, walking in the rain, in my quiet neighborhood, with red and yellow leaves all around me.

And I've been thinking a lot lately about how it's a privilege to be in God's creation. We get to have moments like this when we feel like we're in the midst of something that not everyone gets to experience. In fact, I wondered where all my neighbors were that day (probably inside, staying dry)--but why would anyone want to miss this?

I've been cherishing the weekends during this season. They have been filled with fun fall things like a trip to the pumpkin patch, pizza and baseball games, and birthdays. There have been many great conversations, chilly walks in the neighborhood, and morning coffee with my husband.

In the past few months, babies have been born, friends (and my sister!) have gotten engaged. I smile when I think about all of the beautiful moments they will experience. I love this season of life, which is filled with the privilege of joining the people we love in their moments of joy.

After reading this post about "eternal perspective," I've also started viewing my job as a privilege. I get to teach children who desperately need good teachers. Daily, I am reminded that life doesn't revolve around me and my needs. There are things that are much more important.

At the same time, as Richard's post says, God doesn't need me--He is taking care of business all around the world, and would continue to take care of business, even if I weren't there. I get to be where I am, learning lessons of selflessness and service (and there are many many lessons to learn).

All of this represents a slightly different perspective than standing in awe of God's goodness and grace. It's a sense of gratitude that I've been allowed to take part in it all. I try to remember that none of these moments are made by man, but happen because God calls us to relationship--with Him and his creation, and with other people. Relationships, love, wonder, enjoyment, service--these are things that none of us can make ourselves--so we are privileged that God allows us to step in.

But the reality is that I often forget how lucky I am. I get caught up in my latest worry, fear, jealousy, or just plain crankiness. Responding to the truth that life is a privilege means recognizing worry as a waste of time, and jealousy as an indicator that I need to start counting my blessings...

So, in the spirit of gratitude, I'm going to join Rebekah and Kristen in photographing and posting photos of life's blessings this November. It is afterall, a month to give thanks, and a season to enjoy beauty and friendship. And really...why would anyone want to miss out on this? :)
